I'm navigating through this round world while living a square life, and it fits exactly as it should.

Year Half Gone or Half Remaining?

on July 2, 2014

It’s July!  How did that happen?  More importantly WHEN did that happen?  Half the year is already gone!

I really try to always be a glass half full kind of person.  That being said, with the year already half over, I’m having a very hard time seeing the year as half remaining instead of half gone.  I’ve never really been a New Year’s resolution maker, but I did set some goals for myself this year.  As I look back on what they were, it’s hard to face the fact that I’ve accomplished nothing.

I wanted to PR all of my running distances (5K, 10k, 10 miler and half marathon).  So far, I haven’t even run a 5k or 10 miler this year (Navy was 10 nautical miles, not land miles).  I have done a 10k and a half marathon but they were nowhere near PRs.  In fact, they were PWs (personal worsts).  Having to take my first DNS (did not start) for a half marathon by missing Rock and Roll Nashville doesn’t make me feel any better about this, either.  So, while I still might accomplish part of it, this goal is likely not going to be met.

There were also a number of home projects I wanted to get done.  How many of those have I done?  You guessed it!  Nothing!  And realistically, nothing much will get done towards that specific list by the end of the year, either.

I did get this monstrosity of a bush cut down and back under control but it wasn't on my initial "to do" list.

Another thing contributing towards my year half gone feeling is that to me, the last half of the year always goes by much more quickly than the first half.  So, by the time I get to mid-year, it feels like I might as well start decorating for Christmas.

I know I need an attitude adjustment about this but how do I do that?  I’ll start by focusing on what I HAVE done, that may not have even been on the list to start with.

I did complete a spur of the moment trail half marathon in January.  It was my first trail race, so technically we could call that a trail half PR, right?

I finished!

I finished!

Since the Navy 10 Nautical Miler was a new distance for me, I can call that a PR, too.

I’ve had a great travel year so far!  I took a semi last-minute trip to New York City, my first time going!

I’ve yet to tell you all about it, but that’s coming.  I’ve been to Walt Disney World twice this year and got to participate in some really fun experiences.

I also have 2 more great trips on the horizon, one for later this year, and one for next year, if nothing happens to prevent them.

I also finally did something about the nagging foot pain I’ve been having, and while it’s not 100% perfect, it’s probably as close to perfect as it’s going to be.

So, all in all, it really hasn’t been a bad year so far, and all the important things are still going well.  I’m healthy, and my family is healthy, as far as I know.  However, I do feel the need to make better use of the time I have.  I can make excuses all day long for why things don’t get done but that doesn’t make things all of a sudden get accomplished.  Life, like my career, needs a plan for reaching goals.  Unfortunately, it’s not always enough just to set them.

With the remaining 6 months of 2014, I’m going to start setting monthly goals for myself, bite-sized pieces.  At the beginning of each month, I’ll take a really hard look at what I think I can realistically accomplish personally in that 30 or 31 days.  Then at the end of the month, I’ll re-evaluate and see how I did.

I have 6 whole (almost) months to do this!  So, the year really is half remaining.

  1. Congrats on the things you DID accomplish! Your year sounds pretty delightfully eventful so far. And don’t beat yourself up over things you haven’t yet accomplished. We’re only halfway through which means there is plenty time to get working on/towards those goals. 🙂

  2. I like looking at the glass half full – way to go on all you’ve done so far this year!

  3. […] I posted about how I’ve been feeling like the year is slipping away in Year Half Gone or Half Remaining? […]
